a new set of wheels

November 29, 2011 § 20 Comments

This weekend, for the first time in maybe 17 years I really wanted to roller skate…or rollerblade… but most definitely not roller derby.

The Retiro was was packed with people in skates.

From young to old,  people were swarming the park. At every turn there was a new group of bladers or family fastening knee pads and hand guards on their beloved angel.

There were also lessons… with cones… and tricks.

All of the people whizzing by me made me jealous. Jealous for a new set of wheels.

It seems so cool.

Do people roller skate where you live?¬†All I can picture is 80’s outfits cruising around Malibu or South Beach. Have I missed something?

And while we’re on the topic: roller skate or roller blade?

In the spirit of the holiday that I am completely skipping this year…

Okay, I lie.

I am celebrating with this.

A lone sweet potato.

You see, I decided since I am not home for Thanksgiving this year, I will just skip the holiday all together. It’s easier that way.

But my sweet potato and I will have a lovely fourth Thursday in November.

So… in the spirit of this random Thursday I spent some time thinking about the reasons I am thankful for Madrid.

Other than the entire reason I live here… here are a few things I absolutely love about living on the east side of the ocean.

It’s easy to complain when my arms are about to fall off due to lugging home my grapefruit obsession. But I do love the walk-ability of Madrid.

Not in these. There are insane women who trek around the city in 4 inch heels. Not I!

Flat walking boots. Much better.

Sitting as long as you like

When dining at a restaurant or simply meeting a friend for coffee, you can sit as long as you like. One 2 Euro tea you are entitled to the table for… well, as long as you like. 1, 2+ hours. No one rushes you with the check, no one is waiting for their next tip. It’s relaxation and leisure at it’s finest.

Exquisite fruits and vegetable for next to nothing

This week I bought:

  • 4 large grapefruit
  • 3 Fuji apples
  • 2 Bananas
  • 2 pounds of potatoes

All of this cost less than 5.50 Euros!

I won’t be home for Thanksgiving this year, but my wonderful mother is going to set up skype so I can be a part of all the Thanksgiving mayhem that ensues year after year with my family. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I thankful that my mom is trying to make it as special as possible, even if I am not there.

Plaza Mayor – Moms first [of many] trips!

Does skipping Thanksgiving dinner mean I can eat double at Christmas dinner? Yes. Definitely yes.

Wherever you are… whatever you are doing… I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving Thursday!

Bonus Story:

I’m sorry, so sorry

It was day one in the beautiful city of London and I found myself standing behind this gentleman.

One photo.

Only one possible story.

I did something bad. Very bad. And I am sorry. Very sorry.

The End.

Thank you for following my London short stories series. I think my inner fantasy of one day being a Golden Book author has surfaced. And p.s. will travel for friends is always open. Anyone hungry for Saf?

Where Am I?
